Climate and soil requirement

Coconut palm is tropical plant is found to grow in varying climate and soil condition. The coconut plant grows well upto an altitude of (600-900m), it can tolerate wide range of rainfall intensity but 200cm per year rainfall is best for proper growth and higher yield. Red sandy loam Laterite and alluvial soils with well drainage is suitable, imperfectly drained soil or areas subject to water stagnation is unsuitable.

Land preparation  

The type of land preparation depends on land topology soil type. The Planting area should be marked, dig a pit as shown in image below. If the land is slopy or in undulating terrain soil conservation method such as contour terracing or bunding should be adopted. If the ground water level is high planting may be done in mounds. In rice field or low lying area form mounds at least 1m above water level. High water level should be considered by identifying max water level in rainy season.

Before planting the pits must be filled with top soil and dry cowdung/dry leaf mold upto depth of 0.5 to 0.6m. Then dig a small pit inside this, so that the nut attached to seedling can be accommodated. After planting seedling press the soil well so that water stagnation can be avoided.
