Scientific Name: Punica granatum
Common Name: Anaar, Dalimba
Climate and soil requirement
Pomegranate can be grown on a wide range of soils. However, it grows well in medium deep, loamy
and well-drained soils having a pH of 7.5. Pomegranates can be successfully grown in areas with temperature ranging from 25-35 C and an annual rainfall of 500-800mm. Hot and dry climate during fruit development improves its fruit quality. The plants are affected if the temperature remains below 11 C for a longer time. Humid climate during fruit setting adversely affects the fruit colour development, quality and increases pest and disease attack.
Land preperation
Pits of size 60×60×60cm should be dug at a distance of 4.5 m x 4.5 m Leave for 15-20 days exposing to sunlight. Each pit should be filled with surface soil mixed with 15 kg farm yard manure before planting the grafted plants.
Pruning
For proper growth of trunk of plant, removal of ground suckers , water shoots, cross branches , dead and diseased twigs should be done. A little thinning and pruning of old twigs is done to encourage growth of new ones.
